How to Clean Your Outdoor Artificial Trees & Plants?

Table of Contents

In today’s world, where the daily hustle and bustle can sometimes feel overwhelming, having some greenery in our immediate environment can be a breath of fresh air. However, the joy of these green companions can be significantly undermined if they become unsightly due to neglect. So, whether they are outdoors or indoors, large or small, synthetic or silk, how does one care for artificial plants? Let’s explore.

Artificial outdoor plants come in an array of forms, thereby offering you numerous options. From hanging baskets teeming with one type of plant to those bursting with different blooms and foliage, the range is vast. Additionally, artificial plants and trees can be found in various sizes, planted in pots, or directly in the ground. There are also impressive green walls, which are often large installations composed of many individual plants.

When it comes to cleaning your outdoor artificial plants, you can use the same materials as for your indoor ones. This includes dusters, brushes, and compressed air. You may also use a hosepipe or watering can to rinse off any dirt. Mother Nature, in her generous fashion, also contributes to the cleaning process by blowing away or washing off dirt periodically.

Pay Attention to the Challenges of Outdoor Living:

While the beauty of being outdoors is incomparable, we also share this space with creatures that could potentially cause minor issues. Consider birds, for instance. As beautiful as they are to watch and listen to, they can sometimes leave behind some unpleasant deposits that require cleaning. Most of these are minor and can be easily managed, but if seagulls are in the vicinity, you might have a more significant task at hand!

To tackle this, start by rinsing the area. If the deposit is relatively fresh, this step should take care of most, if not all, of it. If rinsing doesn’t do the trick, or if there are stubborn spots requiring additional attention, put on some rubber gloves and fetch a bucket of warm water. By gently wiping the affected areas with a damp cloth, you should be able to restore your plants’ cleanliness.

Depending on the stain and the durability of your plants, a mild detergent might be helpful. Before applying it, however, do a spot test on a hidden area to ensure it doesn’t discolor or damage the plant. If the stains persist and your plants are robust, the rough side of a kitchen sponge can be used. This ensures you retain a garden full of clean, fresh-looking artificial plants.

Considerations for Coastal Living:

Living near the coast requires extra care when cleaning your plants, which applies not only to those residing on islands but also if you’re in proximity to a construction site.

The problem arises when sand or grit is present in the surroundings and gets carried by the wind. It can land on any surface, including your beloved plants – both artificial and real. If it’s raining, it worsens the situation as the sand and grit can stick to the surfaces. If your plants become covered in sand or grit, which is coarse, as opposed to dust and dirt, which generally are not, cleaning them might cause damage.

In such instances, avoid wiping or rubbing the plant as the sand or grit will act as an abrasive and potentially damage the surface. Rather than wiping, opt to gently wash away the sand and grit using a softly set hosepipe or a watering can equipped with a rose attachment. Consider it a gentle shower rather than a heavy downpour.

For those already living on the coast, this cleaning method might be familiar as it’s often used on windows and cars.

Specialist Cleaning Materials:

For ease of cleaning, specialist cleaning materials are available.

Cleaning sprays: These can help dislodge dust and dirt. There are also specialist sprays safe for use on silks without affecting the colour. Remember to do a spot test on a hidden area first. These sprays are simple to use – just spritz and leave. No additional rinsing or wiping required.

Cleaning wipes: These moist wipes clean the plant and lift away the dirt. Leaf shine wipes are also available, some of which claim to prevent dust from sticking to the plant, making them a worthy consideration.

Investing in artificial plants means it’s essential to maintain them to prolong their life and keep them looking their best. Regular dusting is advisable for outdoor plants, with a more thorough clean once or twice a year. If necessary, more intensive cleaning can be performed, but always with care to prevent damage.
